How Home Organizing Can lead to Better Business Productivity

We tend to think of the home and office as separate entities, even if our office is inside of our home. It goes along with similar dichotomies we’re comfortable with like “day and night” “black and white” or “business versus pleasure”. When we do that we tend to ignore many of the common threads that bind both pieces of our lives together. No matter how much we think or how badly we want it to be separate, we are the same person doing two different things committed to two different worlds. Sometimes all it takes is a home improvement to help your business work better, because the chain reaction one way or another will inevitably lead to benefits affecting either “life”.
Overwhelmed
The single most common threat to workplace productivity is becoming overwhelmed. When we have too much to do or focus on, we tend to slow down and move about our tasks in inefficient roundabout ways. Bettering business productivity might naturally call for an overhaul on office strategy and attempts to organize your at-work system to churn out more work in less time. But consider organizing your homestead too. A Canadian friend of mine recently told me that picking up some Calgary self storage space to store the plethora of things in his house that were constantly distracting him was one of the smartest decisions he ever made. He didn’t realize it at the time, but seeing all the clutter in his home week after week was affecting the clarity of his work time thought process. Every shift started with thoughts about the mess he left behind, and every shift ended with the realization he had to face it all over again. Once that obstacle was removed, his work output increased.
Inspired
We hopefully do enjoy our jobs, but no matter what the single most powerful motivator for us to wake up in the morning and head to work is maintaining a good home with a good family. If we’ve allowed our houses to become dilapidated or simply unexciting to us, then we risk losing a huge chunk of what inspires us to get moving at work, and if I keep up with all this i then have more time to check the football results. Without the right motivation our productivity goes out the windows we’ve maybe been too busy to fix. Something as simple as a bedroom paint job or finally taking care of that weed patch in the backyard can mean newfound appreciation for your home. This in turn may very well lead to you performing better at work simply because you have something you can be proud of.
Don’t fall for the typical human tendency to compartmentalize your life into separate pieces with individual dramas that in no way involve one another. There is only one you, and your one mind is what gets you though every experience you encounter. Acknowledge that happiness at home means happiness in the office and vice versa. Explore organizational and decorating options at home to better your productivity in the work place. One will certainly benefit the other.
